Former F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton will test his speed against
Vodacom’s latest network technology on 20 April.

The McLaren driver will pilot a Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG sedan around
Kyalami in an attempt to move data around South Africa’s 4.2km GP
circuit swifter than Vodacom’s new Metro E Fibre service can send it
from Sandton to Midrand.

Vodacom says the new E Fibre service can deliver speeds of up to 1 Gbps,
which is close to 65% the speed of light. To prove this, Vodacom will
race its new network’s data transporting capability against Hamilton’s
scorching on track pace.

The proposed format will see Vodacom’s E Fibre service carry 5.4Gb of
data from Sandton to Kyalami in Midrand. At the same time Hamilton will
carry data for one lap of the Kyalami circuit. Whoever completes their
delivery to a finish point on the Kyalami circuit first wins.

At this stage it’s unclear exactly which derivate of Mercedes-Benz’s C63
Hamilton will be driving.

Around Kyalami’s undulating topography a stock C63 might not quite be
enough - especially with the standard open rear differential, which is
easily overwhelmed by the C63’s 630Nm of peak rotational force in lower
gears.

If Hamilton can get behind the wheel of the performance plus package
C63 (with 358kW and composite brakes) this might be a race worth watching…

A properly driven C63 AMG should get around Kyalami in just under two
minutes with slick racing tyres.
